I was elected elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly in 2004 to represent the
people of the 44th District, encompassing most of his hometown of Janesville.

Now serving my third term in the Legislature, I was chosen by my Democratic
colleagues to serve as 77th Speaker of the State Assembly.  In this new role, I
am pursuing an aggressive job creation and economic growth agenda to expand
greater opportunity and prosperity for everyone in Wisconsin.

My interest in public service first peaked as a worker on the assembly line at the
General Motors plant in Janesville.  In my 31-year career with GM, I took on
many labor leadership roles, eventually serving two terms as President of UAW
Local 95.

Now retired from work at the plant, I remain active with labor groups both in
Wisconsin and nationwide.  I have served on the board of directors for the
Blackhawk Technical College Foundation, the Leadership Development
Academy and the Janesville Performing Arts Center.  I have also been involved
with the Boy Scouts and the Boys and Girls Club.

From the assembly line to the State Assembly, my values and leadership style
have remained consistent.  I believe legislators must put aside petty partisan
politics to get things done for the people who elect them to serve.

I enjoy spending my free time with my wife, Sarah, who is a social work
lecturer at UW-Whitewater, and our three children, Jason, Aaron, and Hannah,
two grandchildren, Ella and Sam, and our golden retrievers, Rusty and Angel.
